Jim Olmsted is a retired attorney committed to protecting democracy, defending democratic institutions, fighting climate change, and conserving natural lands. He is the co-founder and president of Democracy4All (D4A), a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing these goals.
At Democracy4All, we are driven by a singular mission: to defend and strengthen democracy, both in the United States and globally. We believe that a vibrant, transparent, and accountable democratic system is the foundation upon which all other societal protections depend.
In this era of escalating threats to democracy, we stand against the misuse of executive power, including attempts to undermine environmental protections, defund essential regulatory agencies, and bypass the rule of law. We oppose policies that jeopardize fundamental safety nets like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid—programs that millions of Americans rely upon for survival.
Our mission extends beyond the immediate threats. We understand that protecting democracy is not merely a political objective; it is a moral imperative. Without free and fair elections, without a government that serves the public interest, and without institutions that defend human rights and environmental sustainability, there can be no effective response to the climate crisis.
We therefore dedicate our efforts to:
